Ancient Civilizations Links

Hi Grade 5s,

Here's a shortcut to some links that could be helpful for your ancient civilizations projects.

Week of January 18th

Monday, January 18, 2010
Morning : Jozsef is reading a book. Most of the class is. People are quiet… it scares me. Kamilah is making a poster for Haiti.

Writing : We are now writing. For writing, we’re writing about our holidays. Britny and I are correcting our Holiday Essays.

Math : Today we’re learning about Mean and mode. It’s a bit hard, but in a day or two we’ll probably catch on. We are taking up our answers as a class because it’s tricky. Ms. Lewis is saying a bunch of random numbers. Today we’re learning about Bar Graphing, and we’ll be talking about intervals and range.

Working on our math.

French : French wasn’t easy because we have a supply teacher. He kept yelling at us because some students were loud. He told Ms. Lewis about seven students were behaving, which he pointed out. I’m glad that’s over, now we can move onto Social Studies.

Science : We all have straws on our desk. We have partners and we’re doing Measuring Force. We need a lot of materials!

Today is a fresh day!
Reading : Right now we're learning about How To Summarize! Sounds interesting. The class (including me) don't really understand what Ms. Lewis is saying. But some kids are catching on to it, including me a little bit... Now we're writing about summary using the 3 Little Pigs. Now we're talking about Cinderelly.

Math : Once again we're learning about mean and mode. It's not really easy.

French : We went to french! It's not easy because we had a supply teacher. About 7 students were good, the rest were 50% good. I'm glad it's done, now we can do Social Studies.

Social Studies : We are starting our timelines for famous Canadians. In my group, there is Zainab, Cameron, Alex, Jozsef, and me, Arissa! We just got paper about 185 cm long. That's pretty long.

Working on our time lines.

Thursday, January 21, 2010

Reading : We're back! We're talking about the 3 Little Pigs again. We're writing about the story. Now we're doing The Horses of Sable Island. It's not so funny, neither cool, but I have to admit, it's pretty interesting! This is HARD!

Social Studies : We're working on our time lines. We're writing about our famous Canadians.

Updating our agendas and getting ready to go home.

Guess what? It's DANCE-A-THON DAY.

Inanimate Alice

Hi Grade 5s,

Today during our library period Ms. Costello showed us a very cool interactive novel online.  We learned about Alice's adventures in China and Italy.

If you'd like to read more about Alice, visit this link.  I'll also put a link to Alice's site in our "Class Links" section on the left of the screen.  That way, you can visit the site easily, without having to go back to this post.

Enjoy!

-Ms. Lewis.

Week of January 11th

It's Friday already?!?

Welcome to another Week In Review for Room 204.  This has been an action-packed week, and our first official full week back since the Winter Break, as we spent half the week at Lake St. George last week.

We got back into the swing of things, and continued our work on our holiday essays.  Throughout the week, we've been writing the body of our essay (the paragraphs about the three activities we've chosen to write about), and we started to learn how to write a good introductory paragraph to an essay.  I showed you how to begin by talking about the essay's main idea generally (in our case, how everybody thinks about holidays), then becoming more specific (how our families think about holidays), and finally writing about the main idea very specifically (how was my holiday).  We also discussed giving your readers a quick glimpse at the activities they would be reading about later on in our essay by briefly listing the subjects of our 3 body paragraphs.

In math, we did really well on our final decimals test.  We took them home last night (Thursday) to be signed and returned to school.  If you haven't brought back your test for me yet, please do so as soon as possible.  Today we started our new unit on data management by interpreting data in graphs and tables.  We thought this was a breeze, and sailed through the assigned questions!

In Social Studies, we began to play the Headbands game using famous Canadians as our subjects.  We had a great discussion on the role of women in history, and how important it has been and continues to be for brave people to stand up and fight for what they believe in.  Women like Nellie McClung and Agnes Macphail showed incredible bravery, and we thought they are very inspirational!  We will be using these people to create timelines of important moments in Canadian history next week.

In Science, we started our new unit about Forces On Structures.  We learned that we measure force with Newtons (N), and we practiced measuring force using spring scales.  We had a lot of fun running around the room looking for the items with the most force.

This was a difficult week for the world.  The devastation in Haiti after the earthquake provided a perfect opportunity for all of us in Room 204 to stop and think about how lucky we are to live here in Canada, and about the responsibilities we have as citizens of this country.  After watching footage of Haiti and seeing photographs, you all wanted to do what you could to help those in need.

Grade 5s, I am always so proud to be your teacher, but at that moment, I couldn't have been prouder.  Arissa, you led the class by asking what we could do as a class to show our support for the Haitians.  Thank you for your maturity and sensitivity!  What a caring and empathetic response.

We spent time this afternoon making posters and writing announcements about our upcoming Dance-a-thon to raise money for the Red Cross's efforts in Haiti.  Click on the Red Cross for a link to see how the money you raise will help.

Above: Writing announcements to help spread the word

Above: Creating beautiful posters for our hallways

By helping to organize our Dance-a-thon, you are all proving what a difference children can make in the world.  You are all inspirations for us adults!

Above: Using the computer to research Haiti

Above: Working together to make our Dance-a-thon a success!

One of my favourite quotations is from Mahatma Gandhi, a man who dedicated his life to peace.  He said,

Be the change
you want to see
in the world.

By demonstrating your concern and compassion for those in Haiti, you truly are, Grade 5s, being the change we need to see in the world.

See you Monday.

-Ms. Lewis.

Calling All Photographers!

Did you have a camera at Lake St. George?

Did you take great pictures of your friends?

Do you want to share your photographic talents with the rest of the class?

If you answered YES to any of these questions, bring Ms. Lewis your photographs!  I need your pictures for a little project I'm planning, but I can't complete it without your help.

There are a few ways you can get your pictures to me:

-bring in your memory card so I can pull your pictures off (memory cards will be returned next day)
-e-mail your pictures to room2040910@gmail.com
-bring your pictures to class on a memory stick, and we can upload them onto our class computer (memory sticks will be returned same day)

Thanks!

-Ms. Lewis.

Forces On Structures

Hi Grade 5s,

Today we started our new science unit about Forces on Structures.  We talked about how a force is a push or a pull that acts on an object.

We learned that a force can: -start the motion of an object (pushing a pencil along a page makes it roll)
-stop the motion of an object (pulling a balloon's string stops it from floating away)
-change the direction or shape of an object (sitting on a pillow makes the pillow flat)

Your assignment for tonight is to record 5 activities that involve force, and what kind of force is exerted (used).

We heard great examples in class, such as:

-typing on a keyboard uses pushing force (Shemar)
-putting magnets on a fridge uses pulling (magnet pulls itself to fridge) and pushing (hand pushes magnet towards fridge) forces (Nicholas)
-playing video games uses pushing force on the controller's buttons (Jozsef)

You can post your homework assignments here.

Questions?  Post them here, too.

See you tomorrow!

-Ms. Lewis.
